LAXGALTS'AP GEOTHERMAL PROJECT
Project Details
Geothermal was identified as an opportunity for development throughout the regional energy analysis conducted for the Village of Laxgalts’ap due to the proximity to the Tseax cone, the second most recently active Volcano in North America. With several hot springs in the area, geothermal holds strong cultural significance to Laxgalts’ap and the people of the Nisga’a Nation who have indicated they would like to explore the possibility of a project.
As capacity building, Massif Energy led a delegation to Chena Alaska to understand the opportunities for geothermal development. A tour was provided showing the geothermal heated greenhouses, electrical generator, and heating for the entire resort including hot pools.
The Laxgalts’ap geothermal exploration project is being pursued in the Nass valley to understand the geothermal potential for power generation and heating near the Village. The exploration activities include desktop analysis and 3D modelling, surface water and rock sampling, and geophysical measurement. Further study will include access and drill campaign design with additional community engagement to determine if the project should move ahead.
